The Founders’ Story of The Cove

In 2021, Brian DuMont wasn’t exactly eager when his friend Mark kept insisting he visit him in Wilmington to check out his new houseboat. Brian pictured a tiny, rickety vessel, hardly worth the trip. But after enough convincing, Brian finally gave in and made the trip down from Raleigh to check it out.

 What awaited him was beyond anything he had imagined. Instead of a cramped boat, Brian stepped onto a 1,200-square-foot luxury floating villa—sleek, modern, and anchored right in the heart of Downtown Wilmington. As Brian marveled at the space, Mark laughed, “I told you it was worth the trip. You should buy one, too!”

But Brian was already thinking bigger. Much bigger.

 After returning home, Brian couldn’t stop thinking about the houseboat. He shared the experience with his wife, Summer, and they both knew this was more than just a rental opportunity—it was a chance to create something truly special. With Brian’s background in real estate and Summer’s sharp eye for design, they saw the potential for a full-scale luxury experience on the water. And rather than purchasing just one houseboat, they decided to buy them all.

 Partnering with Atlantic Houseboats, the company that designed the project and built the houseboats, Brian and Summer worked to bring their vision to life. The plan? To build out the remaining 35 houseboats and craft a unique, high-end destination in Downtown Wilmington.

They didn’t just want to offer a place to stay; they wanted to create an unforgettable experience—a blend of boutique luxury, coastal charm, and strong ties to the local community.

Over the next three years, the couple dedicated themselves to building both the houseboats and a passionate, talented team to support the project. From layout and amenities to interior aesthetics, every detail was carefully thought out to ensure a premiere experience for future guests. When it came time to name the destination, The Cove was the perfect fit—a place of shelter, peace, and escape. Just as a cove offers a safe harbor, The Cove would become a serene retreat for travelers.

By the time the final houseboat was completed in May 2024, The Cove had grown into a thriving operation, employing over 20 local team members. It quickly gained attention, not only for its stunning waterfront views and luxury accommodations but also for its growing social media presence. Guests shared their experiences online, showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of The Cove.

The picturesque floating villas became a hit, drawing visitors from across the country and beyond, all looking for that perfect mix of relaxation and luxury.

But Brian and Summer didn’t stop there. The Cove continues to evolve, always adding new touches to make every stay even more special. Whether through new amenities, exclusive events, or personalized services, The Cove team remains dedicated to creating a one-of-a-kind experience. True to its original vision, they are deeply committed to supporting the local Wilmington community, building partnerships with neighboring businesses and promoting the area’s vibrant culture.
